1.1 USING THIS MANUAL
This Concise Manual is designed to function as a basic instruction
manual, to enable you to install the Publisher and make sufficient use
of it to make a proper assessment of its capabilities. The complete
instruction and reference manual including a Quick Reference Guide, a
set of standard style sheets, a Problem Solving Guide, appendices,
examples, a glossary of technical terms and an alphabetical index, is
too lengthy for inclusion on a distribution diskette. A copy of it in
printed form is shipped to all users who register and pay the prescribed
licence fee, as described in Section 1.4.
1.2 INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
1.2.1 ENVIRONMENT
Rubicon Publisher 2.2C may be installed on any IBM personal computer
(PC/XT, PC/AT or PS/2) or other compatible microcomputer which uses the
MS-DOS operating system, version 2.1 or newer. The Publisher can be
operated without a graphics card, but the optional Screen Preview
feature cannot be used unless the computer and monitor support VGA
graphics (monochrome or color).
The Publisher supports PostScript printers, most laser printers, and a
wide selection of other printers, including most popular 9-pin and
24-pin dot-matrix printers: a detailed list is given in Item 4 in
Section 1.2.3, below.
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT DOT-MATRIX PRINTERS: The Publisher drives
dot-matrix (and similar) printers in GRAPHICS MODE, which requires
RELIABLE AND PRECISE PAPER FEED, and ACCURATE CONTROL OF PRINTHEAD
MOVEMENT. Some printers (not necessarily the oldest or least expensive
models) are poorly designed in these respects; and printers which are
worn out by long use, or are in need of servicing or lubrication, may
also exhibit "sloppy" paper feed or printhead movement. Such printers
may work well enough in "text" mode, but may fail to operate
satisfactorily in graphics mode. If used with the Publisher, they
typically produce lines of print which are distorted horizontally or
vertically and/or disfigured by horizontal white lines. These conditions
indicate a HARDWARE PROBLEM, not a defect or "bug" in the software.
"Sloppy" paper feed is sometimes caused by
* incorrect paper path through the printer;
* obstruction or misalignment of the path followed by the paper
before it enters or after it leaves the printer;
* use of poor-quality computer paper;
* use of a type of paper not suited to your printer's feed mechanism
(for example, some printers cannot handle extra-heavy paper
stock or 3-part forms accurately enough for graphics mode).
If you encounter the problems described above, you should check these
possibilities before concluding that your printer will not work with the
Publisher. Also, some printers support alternative paper paths or feed
modes. In this case, the path and mode which provide the smoothest and
most accurate paper feed should be used when the printer is being driven
by the Publisher. In particular, if your tractor feed supports both a
"push" and a "pull" mode, the "pull" mode should be used with the
Publisher.
1.2.2 DISTRIBUTION SET
Rubicon Publisher Version 2.2C is distributed on magnetic media and
bulletin boards in compressed (or "archive") form, with an interactive
installation program. The set of distribution files consists of two
plain ASCII text files, README and MANUAL.1, and five (5)
self-extracting compressed files: RUP22C.EXE, 120X72.EXE, INSTALL.EXE,
300X300.EXE, and 180X180.EXE. A 360KB format distribution set consists
of two disks:
Disk 1 Disk 2
--------------- ---------
README 120X72.EXE 300X300.EXE
MANUAL.1 INSTALL.EXE 180X180.EXE
RUP22C.EXE
You are now reading file MANUAL.1.
1.2.3 PRE-INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL THE PUBLISHER:
1. Make sure that you have the 7 files listed above, and that these are
the ONLY Rubicon Publisher files you have. DO NOT expand any of the
compressed files before installing the Publisher: the Installation
program will expand them automatically, as and when required. (If you
have already expanded some of these files, please delete the files
created by the expansion, before proceeding further.) If you have
downloaded from a bulletin board, you should also ensure that the 7
distribution files are ALL on the SAME DIRECTORY. To avoid conflict with
the installation procedure, this directory should NOT be named
"RUBICON".
2. Determine which drive the Publisher is to be installed on. We
recommend that you install the Publisher on a hard disk drive, if
possible. If the Publisher is being installed for a 120x72 dpi printer
(most 9-pin dot-matrix printers), or for a PostScript or LaserJet III
printer, at least 720 KB of space should be available for the
installation. If it is being installed for a 180x180 dpi printer (most
24-pin dot-matrix) or a 300x300 dpi printer (other than PostScript or
LaserJet III), an additional space of at least 500 KB should be available
for storing the necessary soft fonts.
3. Determine whether your computer supports VGA graphics: that is,
whether it has a VGA graphics card and a compatible monitor. (Refer to
your computer's instruction manual if necessary.) If you have VGA, you
can install the Publisher's optional Screen Preview feature, which will
enable you to display published documents on your video screen for
inspection, before printing them. (If your computer does not support
VGA, you can still install and use the Publisher, but the Screen Preview
will not be available.)
Note: The Preview can be INSTALLED on any system which supports VGA
graphics, but cannot be USED to preview documents being published
with PostScript or LaserJet-3 devices, or LaserJet-2 documents
using Landscape printing.
4. Identify the make and model of printer for which the Publisher is to
be installed, with reference to the list of supported printers given
below.
Note (a): If your printer is not on the list, it may be possible to set
it up to emulate one of the listed printers. For example, numerous
models of 9-pin dot-matrix printers can be set up to emulate an
Epson FX-80. If you have one of these, you can install the
Publisher for an Epson FX-80, and use it to drive your printer in
FX-80 mode.
Note (b): If you install the Publisher for an emulation that does not
work satisfactorily, you can re-install for a different printer
model (provided that it uses the same resolution as the first one)
without repeating the entire installation procedure. To perform
such a printer re-installation, log on to the directory where the
Publisher has been installed (usually C:\RUBICON), and enter the
command "SELECTP". The printer selection menu will appear. Proceed
as in Step G in Section 1.3, below.
Note (c): It is technically possible to install the Publisher for
multiple printers. However, your first installation should be made
for a single printer. Multiple printer installations require the
creation of customized configuration files and should be attempted
only by persons who are completely familiar with the Publisher's
operating principles and command language.
Note (d): If your printer is not listed below and will not emulate a
listed printer, a version of the Publisher which supports your
printer may be available on special order. Enquiries should be
directed to Rubicon Computer Labs Inc., at the address given in
Section 1.4.

POSTSCRIPT DEVICES
------------------
The Publisher supports ALL PostScript devices, using the `PostScript'
installation option. The installation procedure for such printers does
not require designation of the specific make or model of printer.
LASER PRINTERS
------------------
The Publisher has two printer driver options for laser printers other
than PostScript devices, as follows.
LaserJet-2
----------
This option supports all laser printers which use Hewlett-Packard PCL4
printer commands, including
LaserJet+ and 500+
LaserJet 2000
LaserJet II series (IIP, IID, etc.)
LaserJet III operating in LaserJet II mode.
MOST LASER PRINTERS (other than PostScript printers) use Hewlett-Packard
PCL4 printer commands in their normal operating mode, or in an optional
`LaserJet emulation' mode. The Publisher is installed for all such
printers by using the LaserJet-2 installation option. The installation
procedure for such printers does not require designation of the specific
make or model of printer.
LaserJet-3
----------
This option supports the LaserJet III operating in LaserJet III mode,
that is, using the Hewlett-Packard PCL5 printer command language and the
scalable fonts built into the LaserJet III.
1.3 INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE
The installation program will install the Publisher on any drive
specified by the user, provided that the designated drive has sufficient
space available. (See item 2 in Section 1.2.3, above.) NOTE: There must
be no existing directories named "RUBICON" or "RUFONT" on the drive
where the Publisher will be installed.
If you are installing the Publisher from distribution diskette(s), the
first step is to load the distribution diskette (or distribution diskette
No. 1, if there are more than one) into diskette drive `A' or `B', and log
on to the selected drive.
If you have downloaded from a bulletin board, the first installation
step is to log on to the directory where the downloaded files are
located.
Then proceed as follows:
A. Start the installation program by entering the command
INSTALL [drive_letter]
where "drive_letter" identifies the drive on which you wish to install
the Publisher. (If no drive letter is specified, it will be assumed that
Drive C is intended.) By means of a screen message, the program will
confirm the drive on which the publisher is to be installed. If it is
correct, enter "c" to continue: otherwise, enter "q" to abort, and begin
again.
B. The installation program will next display the following menu:
Install a Printer?
1. LaserJet-2
2. Postscript
3. LaserJet-3
4. 9-Pin Dot Matrix; 120x72 dpi
5. 24-Pin Dot-Matrix; 180x180 dpi
6. No Printer
Indicate your printer selection by entering the appropriate number, for
example, "4" for a 9-pin dot matrix printer.
C. The program will confirm the printer option selected, and then
display the prompt:
Specify Printer Port? [No]
Normally, the printer you will be using with the Publisher will already
be installed on your computer as the DOS PRN standard printer device. In
this case, you should enter "n" for No, and proceed directly to Step D.
(If you have only one printer, this will almost certainly be true,
unless your printer is a SERIAL LaserJet, SERIAL LaserJet emulator, or
SERIAL PostScript device.)
[A Yes answer to this prompt is required only if you are
installing the Publisher for a printer which will NOT be
driven as the DOS PRN device. This seldom arises, unless:
(a) you have more than one printer connected to your computer.
In this case, it MAY be necessary to specify a particular
printer port for the Publisher installation. If so, enter "y"
for Yes. The program will then display a menu of 6 printer
port options. Select the desired option by entering the
corresponding number, for example "2" for Parallel Port LPT1,
or "5" for Serial Port COM1. The program will confirm the
option selected.
(b) your printer is a SERIAL LaserJet, SERIAL LaserJet
emulator, or SERIAL PostScript device.) The MS-DOS printer
driver is NOT SUITABLE for a LaserJet or LaserJet emulator
driven through a SERIAL (RS232C) interface, nor is it suitable
for some popular SERIAL PostScript devices, such as the Apple
LaserWriter. These serial devices all require the Xon/Xoff
handshaking protocol, which is not supported by the MS-DOS
serial driver. To provide full and proper support for
LaserJet-2, LaserJet-3 and PostScript type serial devices
requiring the Xon/Xoff protocol, the Publisher includes the
"Greenleaf" serial driver, as an option. If you are installing
the Publisher for use with one of these serial devices, you
should enter "y" for Yes. The program will then display a menu
of 6 printer port options. Select the serial port your printer
is connected to, by entering the corresponding number, "5" for
Serial Port COM1, or "6" for Serial Port Com2. The program
will confirm the serial port selected, and will AUTOMATICALLY
select the Greenleaf printer driver option.]
D. The program will display the prompt:
Install another printer? [No]
Enter "n" for No, and proceed directly to Step E.
["y" is entered only if you are attempting a multiple-printer
installation. The Publisher supports such installations, but
they require user-created configuration files, etc., and
should be attempted only by users who are thoroughly familiar
with the Publisher.]
E. The program will display the prompt:
The Preview requires a VGA card. Install VGA Preview? [No]
If your computer has a VGA card, enter "y" for Yes. If not, enter "n".
The program will display a summary of the installation instructions you
have given it. If they are correct, enter "c" to continue: otherwise,
enter "q" to abort, and begin again.
F. The program will proceed to create the necessary directories on the
designated drive, copy Publisher files to them, and expand the files,
which typically takes several minutes. Screen messages will indicate the
progress being made. NOTE: If you are using a 360 kb format 2-disk
installation set, Disk 2 will be needed only if you have selected the
LaserJet-2 or 24-pin dot-matrix printer option (selection 1 or 5 at Step
B). In this case, the program will prompt you to insert Disk 2 at the
proper time.
G. If you have selected a 9-pin or 24-pin dot-matrix printer (option 4
or 5 at Step B) the program will display a menu of printer models,
arranged alphabetically. Otherwise, the program will go directly to
Step H.
If the printer menu appears, use the [cursor down] and [cursor up] arrow
keys to move through the menu until you reach the listing for your
printer. (The menu is several screens long, and scrolls automatically.)
Press the [Enter] key to select the desired printer when you reach it.
The program will then perform the remaining installation steps.
H. The program will display a screen message indicating that the
installation is complete, and will return you to the DOS prompt. The
Publisher has now been installed.
If questions or problems arise during installation, or if you wish to
employ a more complicated installation procedure for sophisticated
users, which is required for certain hardware setups, and enables the
Publisher to be accessed from any directory, please refer to the
Appendix to this Manual, in file MANUAL.APP.
BEFORE USING THE PUBLISHER:
1. Refer to the file README on the Rubicon directory. If you have not
already read it, please read it carefully now.
2. Use the Publisher to publish the Samples and Tutorial, by following
the detailed instructions in README.
3. Use the Tutorial to teach yourself how to use the Publisher.
NOTE: 1. When publishing certain documents, the Publisher may need to
have as many as 10 files open simultaneously. Unless it has been
configured to permit a greater number, the MS-DOS operating system will
only permit 8 files to be open at once. If your operating system has
not been so configured, attempting to publish certain documents may
result in an error message to the effect that too many files are open.
If this problem arises, please refer to the Appendix, section A.2.3.
2. If you will be using a SERIAL PRINTER or other serial output
device, or will be using HEWLETT-PACKARD SOFT FONTS, or will be using
MORE THAN ONE PRINTER, after running the INSTALL program, you should
refer to the appropriate sections of the Appendix to this Manual, in
file MANUAL.APP.
1.4 LICENSING AND REGISTRATION
If you have purchased the COMMERCIAL VERSION of the Publisher from
Rubicon Software or an authorized dealer, you have been automatically
registered as a licensee, and granted a User's Licence on the terms
specified in Section 1.5. [IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PRINTED COPY OF THE
COMPLETE REFERENCE MANUAL, YOU DON'T HAVE THE COMMERCIAL EDITION OF THE
PUBLISHER: YOU HAVE THE SHAREWARE EDITION.]
If you have purchased a copy of the Publisher as SHAREWARE, or have
obtained a usable copy of the Publisher by any other means, such as
copying from another computer, or making an additional installation from
a distribution diskette, you may use it only for purposes of EVALUATION,
DEMONSTRATION OR REVIEW, and you may make and distribute further copies
only for those purposes. USE FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE IS CONTRARY TO LAW,
UNTIL YOU HAVE REMITTED THE PRESCRIBED USER'S LICENCE FEE TO OUR MAILING
ADDRESS FOR REGISTRATIONS:
